A graduate of Peking University (Ph.D.) and Valparaiso University School of Law (J.D.), Dr. Liu is a
licensed member of the Illinois State Bar. He was also admitted to practice law in the U.S. District Courts
for Southern District of Texas and Northern District of Illinois. His practice includes employment-based
immigrant and non-immigrant petitions, and administrative and judiciary appeals. Prior to practicing law
as a licensed attorney, Dr. Liu interned as law clerk in the Law Division of Cook County Circuit Court,
Chicago, Illinois, and served on the editorial board of Valparaiso University Law Review, Valparaiso,
Indiana.

In addition to practicing law, Dr. Liu is also known as a prolific bilingual writer and independent scholar.
He has published over 10 books and numerous articles on topics ranging from law, philosophy, religion,
history, politics, art, to culture and biography. His books were published in Chinese and English by
various prestigious publishers in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the United States, collected
by a large number of government and college libraries worldwide. In 2003, Read, known as China’s
New Yorker, named Dr. Liu’s book The Concept of Politics (Shanghai Renmin Press, 2003) as one of
the “10 Best Chinese Books of the Year”. Dr. Liu’s most recent English book is Chinese Philosophy in
an Era of Globalization (State University of New York Press, 2004) His most recent Chinese books
include American Case Law for Chinese Readers (Chinese Friendship Press, 2004), and A Pictorial
History of Chinese Immigrants in America (Central
Compilation & Translation Press, 2004).

Prior to being a lawyer and writer, Dr. Liu took various types of jobs. Starting from his teenage days, he
worked as a quarry laborer, a factory worker, a debt collector, a middle school teacher, a librarian and
a college lecturer. In 1999, after obtaining his Ph.D. in philosophy from Peking University, he was
offered “Extraordinary Fellow” at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana. Taking the chance of working
with the world famous philosopher Alvin Plantinga, Dr. Liu moved to the U.S. Having enjoyed the
scholarly atmosphere for quite a while, he decided to step out of the ivory tower and to practice law. In
2001, a generous scholarship from Valparaiso University School of Law made his dream come true.
While in law school, Dr. Liu was a member of Valparaiso University Law Review, served on the editorial
board as the first foreign scholar in the law review's history.

Dr. Liu is fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese.
